What is Mantrailing?

In this canine sport, a dog searches for a hidden person by tracking their distinctive scent with its nose.

The dogs are trained to follow the scent trail left behind by the hidden person (or trail layer), who also leaves behind an item they have worn or touched.

Mantrailing dogs track people down by their distinctive scents in order to receive a reward at the end.

Mantrailing is an excellent sport suitable for all dogs, regardless of age and breed and as each dog is worked independently throughout Mantrailing, reactive or anxious dogs are also welcome to join us.

This provides them an opportunity to form positive associations with scenarios that may have previously frightened them.

Do you want?

  • An amazing bond with your dog?
  • Increased confidence for both you and your dog?
  • To spend more time adventuring outdoors with your dog?
  • A fun and social activity that you can attend on a regular basis?

One of the many amazing things about the Mantrailing sport is that it is fully accessible to all people and dogs, regardless of age, breed or disability.

This also includes dogs with confidence and reactivity issues, as dogs are always worked individually with their owner.

Finding people for fun.

In mantrailing, we educate the dogs to detect a scent from a person's handled or worn object.

Each individual has a unique scent that is made up of bacteria on the skin, scents worn, and pheromones. Up to 40,000 skin rafts leave us every minute, leaving this aromatic mixture in our trail.

The person the dog is searching for is known as the trail layer, and they conceal themselves from the dog. An item that smells like the trail layer is left behind (typically, this is worn apparel). To create an association between the left scent item and the human hiding, they conceal with a food or toy reward for the dog, and subsequently reward the dog when it discovers them.

Since a dog's nose is 10,000–100,000 times more sensitive than a human's, we are able to take advantage of its superior scent abilities..

Mantrailing is for all dogs

Seriously! Every dog can enjoy Mantrailing as a sport. There is no prior training required for dogs, and mantrailing can be done in any frequency. You do not need to commit to a timetable or sign up for classes every week. It's up to you when and how you participate.

When dogs practise Mantrailing, their confidence soars remarkably. Dogs that would normally shy away from strangers are approaching them for treats, whilst dogs that would ordinarily bark at other dogs when out on walks are ignoring them.

It's crucial to establish a close relationship with your dog. Mantrailing helps make it simpler for you to recognise your dog's subtle behaviours, improving your ability to read them.

A Great 5* Review from Charlotte -

We had a fabulous morning with Louise doing an introduction to mantrailing with our GSD. Absolute newbies but Louise was patient and really clear in her teaching of both handler and trail layer (the ‘missing person’). We were able to do a number of trails of different skills and even try with an unknown trail layer when the lovely Naomi arrived. Wilson was absolutely pooped when he got home but he had a lot of fun and we will definitely go back to do progression trails with Louise at In Safe Hands very soon. A great way of developing team work and a fun bond with your dog.
